The Chinese Zodiac and the Wood Dragon

The Chinese Zodiac, based on a 12-year cycle, assigns an animal and one of the five elements to each year. 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon, known for resilience and growth. This year symbolizes a time of renewal and transformation, encouraging ambition, innovation, and the pursuit of dreams. Learn about the legendary race organized by the Jade Emperor and the Dragon's noble fifth-place finish, exemplifying kindness and selflessness.

The Year of the Wood Dragon

The Dragon is the fifth animal in the Chinese Zodiac that follows the Rabbit, and is the only mythical creature in the whole zodiac.

In the race story, the Dragon could have won easily seeing as it is the only animal that could fly. However during the race, the Dragon stopped to help some villagers who were in need and thus came in fifth. In some versions, the Dragon also helped the Rabbit by blowing it towards the shore.

When the Dragon finally crossed the finish line, the Jade Emperor was surprised and asked why such a powerful and magical being would arrive fifth. The Dragon's response, detailing its actions to help others, greatly impressed the Emperor, highlighting the virtues of kindness and selflessness.*

(*This story is widespread and varies slightly among Chinese mythology).

The Dragon is revered and considered the most auspicious and powerful of all zodiac animals. It is seen as a strong symbol of power, strength, wisdom, prosperity and abundance.

People born in the year of the Dragon are known to be ambitious, courageous and enthusiastic. They are also viewed as natural leaders, driven to achieve their goals and willing to take risks. Their shadow side includes arrogance and tactlessness.

You are born in the year of the Dragon if you were born in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024.

2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon. The Wood Dragon, known for its resilience and grwoth, brings a promise of renewal and transformation. 2024 is a year to harness the Dragon's vibrant energy, encouraging ambition, innovation, and the pursuit of dreams.

This year the Lunar New Year falls on Saturday February 10th.
