There’s something both terrifying and captivating about a Cobra rising up, hood flared.
The Cobra doesn’t bluff. It commands presence. But what’s even more fascinating is how this snake, often feared, is actually a deep spiritual symbol across many traditions.
Especially in India, where the Spectacled Cobra is not just sacred, it’s a guardian of powerful wisdom.
In this post, we’re diving into the meaning of the Cobra as an animal spirit and guide. We’ll look at what it represents, how it ties into the Aether element, and why its energy is deeply linked to the upper chakras: the throat, third eye, and crown.
If you’re going through a season of spiritual growth, shedding layers, or craving stillness and perspective, this one’s for you.
Cobra facts: More than just a snake
Let’s take a breath and ground in some awe-inspiring facts about the Spectacled Cobra:
-
It’s called “spectacled” because of the eyeglass-like pattern on its hood, which is a natural symbol of vision and spiritual awareness.
-
Native to India and surrounding regions, the Cobra is deeply embedded in Hindu stories and temple culture.
-
Unlike other snakes, it can raise a significant portion of its body upright and even “dance” to the vibrations of sound — adding to its mystical aura.
-
Cobras are highly intelligent and observant, preferring escape over aggression unless provoked.
This isn’t a creature of chaos. It’s a symbol of conscious transformation, precise energy, and sacred stillness.
Cobra symbolism in Hindu mythology
In Hindu mythology, the Cobra is highly respected and revered.
-
The god Shiva wears a cobra around his neck, symbolising mastery over death and ego, as well as deep inner power.
-
Lord Vishnu is often depicted resting on the coils of the cosmic serpent, Ananta Shesha, whose thousand heads represent infinite time and wisdom.
-
The Cobra is also closely linked with fertility, rebirth, and protection — guarding temples and sacred relics throughout India.
It’s seen as a bridge between the earthly and the divine, the mortal and the eternal. And in yoga and tantra traditions, it’s a representation of Kundalini energy — a coiled serpent at the base of the spine, waiting to rise and awaken your higher self.
Global symbolism: The Snake as a sacred shape-shifter
Across the world, the serpent has been a spiritual icon for transformation, healing, and renewal.
-
In Ancient Egypt, Cobras were symbols of royalty, protection, and divine fire, often seen on the crowns of pharaohs.
-
In Greek mythology, Snakes were sacred to Asclepius, the god of healing — hence the medical symbol of a snake around a staff.
-
In Chinese symbolism, Snakes are seen as wise, intuitive, and mysterious beings, often associated with transformation, healing, and the power of rebirth through shedding old layers.
-
In Indigenous and African cultures, serpents are tied to the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, and revered as keepers of hidden knowledge.
Every culture agrees on this: snakes aren’t to be feared — they’re to be understood.
The Aether Element: The space between all things
Cobra energy aligns with the most mysterious element of all, the Aether or Ether, sometimes also called spirit, space, quintessence or the void (Akasha).
Where earth grounds, fire drives, water flows and air moves… the Aether holds.
It’s the unseen energy that connects all things. The space within the silence. The pulse behind your breath.
When your Aether is out of balance, life feels either:
-
too chaotic or disorienting (like you’re floating without direction),
-
or too disconnected (like you’ve drifted into spiritual bypassing, avoiding what’s real).
But when your Aether is in harmony?
That’s when the clarity comes. You see life for what it is. You feel guided, even in the unknown.
You shed the old, not from fear, but from expansion.
The Upper Chakras: Expression, Intuition, and Divine Connection
Cobra energy is deeply connected to the upper chakras:
-
Throat chakra (Vishuddha): expressing your truth with clarity
-
Third eye chakra (Ajna): seeing through illusion, strengthening intuition
-
Crown chakra (Sahasrara): connecting to the divine, embracing oneness
When these are aligned…
You don’t just “know things” — you understand.
You don’t just “speak up” — you communicate with resonance.
You don’t just “connect” — you are in harmony with the universe.
Living with Cobra energy: ways to ground and rise
If you’re feeling the Cobra calling to you, here’s how to work with its energy in everyday life:
-
Be still: Cobra energy begins in stillness. Meditate, sit quietly, or just close your eyes and feel your breath. Let the noise fade.
-
Move intentionally: Try yoga, tai chi, or slow stretching to awaken the spine and move energy consciously.
-
Speak mindfully: Tune into your words. Let your voice carry truth, not noise. Be conscious of your own venom.
-
Read or journal deeply: Cobra energy loves knowledge, introspection, and truth-seeking.
-
Shed what no longer fits: Reflect on old beliefs, identities, or habits you’re ready to release. What’s holding you back from your highest version?
Artistic Interpretation of the “Spectacled Cobra”
I was grieving deeply when I was working on the Animalis collection. I had lost my father to sickness, and although his death freed him from his suffering, it was a difficult year for me.
I created the Spectacled Cobra with transformation in mind. When I was in Oregon for the total solar eclipse in 2017 (the same year my father passed away), I was walking at night and the affirmation came to me “I shed my skin and release the light from within.”
Over time I realised the grief I was experiencing played a big part in my personal transformation.
When a snake sheds its skin, it’s also a painful process, yet, if it stays stuck in its skin, it is more detrimental to its survival.
The Cobra is an observer. And when it moves, it moves with purpose and wisdom.
I love that the Cobra faces you, observing you, reminding you that transformation is not a process that’s to be rushed.
You just need to be present, and let it unfold.
I’ve since upgraded the affirmation to be more empowering.
"I shed my old skin and embrace transformation, revealing the radiant light of my true self."
