‘Release’ is inspired by the Total Solar Eclipse that happened in Oregon 2017 and is also inspired by Native American art. This piece represents the release of pain and allowing the energy of love to heal.

Symbolism Notes:

Many elements I have used in this piece are inspired by the landscape of Portland, Oregon and Native American symbolism. There is so much to learn from Native American culture, that I cannot even begin to scratch the surface. My hope is that through my inspired art, it encourages you to learn more the Native Americans, as is also my hopes to learn more about their culture and art.

Below are some meanings to some of the elements I have used:

  • Antlers - Deer Animal Totem - Healing, gentleness, kindness and compassion
  • Wings - Hawk Animal Totem - Guardianship, strength, far sighted
  • Eyes - Owl Animal Totem - Wisdom, silent and swift, ability to see things normally, a creature of the night
  • Sun - Provider of light, heat, the facilitator of crops and represented growth. The rays of the sun signified the cardinal directions, North, South, East and West. The Sun Dance was a ceremonial dance performed by North American Plains Indians in honor of the sun at the summer solstice. Abenaki Sun Myth: The Abenaki solar deity 'Kisosen' meaning "Sun-Bringer" was symbolised as an eagle whose wings opened to create the day and whose wings closed to create the night.
  • Moon - Protector and guardian of the earth. Different attributes were assigned to each of the full moons reflecting the seasonal characteristics. Different symbols could be added to the moon symbol to illustrate the time of the year.
  • Mountain Range - To indicate the geography of an area or it was meant to represent the journey that had been made across a mountain range.
